3.2.2. DIMM Configuration

Although populating both memory slots is common in a dual-DIMM memory system, there are some instances when only one slot is populated.

For example, some systems are designed to have a certain amount of memory initially and as applications get more complex, the system can be easily upgraded to accommodate more memory by populating the second memory slot without re-designing the system. The following topics discuss a dual-DIMM system where the dual-DIMM system only has one slot populated at one time and a dual‑DIMM system where both slots are populated.
