3.5. Quad IO Mode (1-4-4 Protocol)

Altera recommends using QSPI devices that support Quad IO mode. This is because Quad IO mode is used during Active Serial x4 (ASx4) configuration.

The control block begins operations by sending opcode through data line 0 (AS_DATA0-to-DATA0). Subsequently, the control block communicates with the QSPI flash device by sending address and write data through all four data lines, and receiving read data and response from the flash device through the same four data lines.

Note: Quad IO mode is different from QPI mode (4-4-4 protocol). If the QSPI flash device initializes with QPI mode upon power-on reset, Active Serial configuration fails.
