1.1. Overview
The Nios® II processor IP was discontinued in Quartus® Prime Pro Edition version 24.1 and Quartus® Prime Standard Edition version 24.1std. The Nios® II processor IP core, including any related executable binaries after Last Time Shipments, is no longer available in the Quartus® Prime IP software. The key obsolescence date for the Nios® II processor is as follows:
- Last order acceptance: 22 March 2024
- Last time shipment: 29 March 2024
Quartus® Prime Pro Edition software version 24.1 and Quartus® Prime Standard Edition version 24.1std onwards does not support any project related to the Nios® II processor. Altera recommends upgrading to the Nios® V Processor, which is based on the RISC-V architecture and offers the following benefits:
- Enables access to a growing ecosystem
- Eliminates the need for Windows Subsystem for Linux
- Provides a dedicated development environment with Ashling RiscFree* IDE for Intel FPGAs software.
Alternatively, you can preserve a Nios® II processor project with pre-generated IP files. This application note provides detailed guidelines on preparing the pre-generated Nios® II processor IP files along with a walkthrough based on simple Nios® II design examples.
