The future of semiconductor innovation depends on a strong pipeline of skilled talent. To help inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators, the Intel Foundation is collaborating with Project Lead The Way (PLTW), one of the nation's leading STEM and career education nonprofits, to expand access to semiconductor and advanced manufacturing education for students across the United States.
At the center of the collaboration is PLTW's new Advanced Manufacturing course, a year-long high school learning experience designed to introduce students to the technologies shaping modern manufacturing and Industry 4.0. The course explores topics including automation, robotics, semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, connected systems, digital twins, and smart factory operations, while helping students build problem-solving, collaboration, and technical skills aligned with today's workforce needs.
Developed with input from industry and education leaders, including Intel subject matter experts, the course brings real-world manufacturing concepts into the classroom through hands-on learning, digital simulations, and exposure to emerging technologies. The course launches this fall in 55 high schools across 22 states, providing students with opportunities to explore careers in one of the world's most critical and rapidly evolving industries.
The Intel Foundation's $3 million investment supports more than curriculum development. Through PLTW Grants, schools in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oregon can receive funding to launch new or expand existing PLTW Engineering and PLTW Gateway programs, helping educators access training, equipment, program fees, and classroom resources needed to deliver impactful STEM learning experiences.
By investing in both students and educators, the collaboration helps create a scalable model for workforce readiness. Schools can expand access to rigorous STEM education, while students gain exposure to high-demand careers and the skills needed to succeed in college, careers, and life. PLTW currently serves approximately 2.4 million students annually through hands-on, project-based learning experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities.
The collaboration also includes the development of the forthcoming MicroChipsters™ Lab, an interactive experience that introduces middle school and above students to semiconductor concepts, chip fabrication, materials science, and career opportunities in the semiconductor industry. By engaging students early, the program aims to spark curiosity and build awareness of the many pathways available within advanced technology fields.
Together, the Advanced Manufacturing course, educator support, school grants, and student learning experiences are expected to reach more than 140,000 students and 1,100 educators over the next three years. These efforts support a shared goal: expanding access to career-connected STEM learning, building awareness of semiconductor and advanced manufacturing careers, and helping more students develop the skills and confidence to pursue future opportunities.
