1.4. Key Concepts

The MIPI DSI and MIPI DSI-2 specifications describe a low-complexity interface that is primarily intended to send video to display modules with limited compute power and buffering. The video is presented on the interface with timing intended to ensure that the video data arrives at the ideal time for display. This reduces or removes the need for the receiver to store or process the video data.

The standards are interchangeable and provide a means of packing the pixel data, along with video sync information, and sending it over the physical interface with the required video timing.

The specifications use the MIPI D-PHY physical interface to carry the packetized data. The IP is designed to interface directly with the Altera MIPI D-PHY IP, using the standard PHY-Protocol Interface (PPI) defined in the D-PHY specification.
