11. Nios® V Processor – Implementing Lockstep Capabilities

Lockstep systems are fault-tolerant computer systems that run the same set of operations simultaneously across two identical systems. The redundancy enables fault detection by comparing outputs from the two identical systems, and fault correction can be integrated to enhance system availability. You can enhance your Nios® V processor system using the Nios® V processor Lockstep feature.

The Nios® V Processor Lockstep feature implements a smart comparator at the register transfer level (RTL). Altera utilizes the Dual-Core Lock Step (DCLS) safety architecture to implement the smart comparator. This approach enables integrating the technology into the Nios® V/g processor, allowing the design of fail-safe applications.
