Intel and Adobe* engineers are continually working together to optimize Creative Cloud* applications for the latest Intel hardware, but last week’s release of Lightroom Classic* (7.2) was particularly special to the Intel engineers on the job. Independent third-party reviews such as this one from Puget Systems show 2X**, 5X**, and even greater performance gains compared to the previous Lightroom version.
Intel and Adobe heard user feedback on Lightroom performance loud and clear, and we responded by optimizing two key areas:
  • Processor “threading” optimizations enable Adobe Lightroom Classic to efficiently take advantage of available Intel® Core™ processor cores to parallelize computationally intensive work.
  • Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (Intel® AVX2 technology) optimizations enable the software to more efficiently utilize the Intel® Core™ microarchitecture.
An application like Adobe Lightroom Classic, which manages dozens or even hundreds of images at a time, gains substantial performance benefits from threading and Intel AVX2 optimization. These processor technologies make better use of more CPU cores and the latest instructions so Lightroom can do more things more efficiently, in parallel. The time is right, as Intel quad-core and higher-core-count processors are becoming prevalent, including the recently released Intel® Core™ i9 Extreme Edition processor with eighteen-cores.

Lightroom users on Intel-based Macs* and PCs were eager to see the application unleash more of the available processor performance. Key functions such as previews, import, and export all see benefit from the optimization work. Particular attention was paid to compute-intensive tasks such as exporting multiple files to the Adobe DNG* file format. Adobe’s blog post discusses optimized and new features in more detail.
