What to do when the Chassis Front Panel Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) Flash Amber and the Event Log Shows the Voltage Regulator (VRD) Hot Event

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

Steps to correct "VRD Hot Exceeded limit" scenario

Description

Blinking amber on the front and the System Event Log (SEL) shows VRD Hot Exceeded limit:

"Temperature VRD Hot (#0x90)    CRITICAL event: VRD Hot reports its limit has been exceeded. (Processor VRD HOT: CPU 2)    Integrated BMC - LUN#0 (Channel#0)"

Resolution

Proceed as follows:

  1. Check for clear and unobstructed airflow into and out of the chassis. Refer to our Self-help guides for the different integration manuals.
  2. Ensure the server board Sensor Data Record (SDR) is the latest version.
  3. Make sure there are no fan failures. Therefore, verify that all fans, including the processor heatsink/fans, are reseated (See How to Install an Intel® Xeon® Processor into an LGA3647 Socket for more information).
  4. See to it that the air used for cooling the system is within the thermal specifications for the system (typically below 35° C).
