Data Loss Reported after Clicking on Pop-Up in Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST)

Content Type: Troubleshooting   |   Article ID: 000057207   |   Last Reviewed: 12/15/2023

Description

The issue affects a limited number of systems where a pop-up appears incorrectly when there is data in the secondary drive or partition. When a user clicks on the pop-up, the data drive or partition is converted into a recovery drive without warning, resulting in data loss.

The pop-up was intended to create an Intel® Rapid Recover Technology (Intel® RRT) volume on a secondary drive or partition. This is to enable users to optimize their space by converting their drive into a recovery drive.

The pop-up should appear only on systems with an empty secondary partition or drive. But on some systems, the pop-up appears even when there is data on the secondary drive or partition causing data loss when initiated.

Note

The pop-up is just an offer that Intel® RST presented. Applying it is voluntary and not something you need to act on your computer.

Resolution

This issue is now fixed, and we have replaced the drivers of 16.8.3.1003 and 15.9.8.1050 with the fix.

We have also placed warnings in the user interface to let users know of possible data deletion for those attempting to create recovery using Intel® RRT manually. All users with the affected drivers are advised to replace their drivers with the current ones. For list of supported platforms please refer to the readme notes.

Users can install the generic Intel® drivers or contact to their system manufacturers for the drivers.

Additional information

Note

The Intel® Rapid Recover Technology (Intel® RRT) is being discontinued and will only be available for legacy Intel® RST drivers. Please read here.

As a general rule, we recommend that users back up their important data to avoid any risk of permanent data loss.
