Note See the Supported Operating Systems for Intel® NUC Products for a list of Windows* versions supported by your Intel® NUC.

Prepare to install

  1. Review the model-specific table below for any special information that applies to your Intel NUC model. 
  2. Install necessary components in the Intel NUC (memory and drive, purchased separately).
  3. Use another computer connected to the Internet to download the latest wired or wireless network driver for your Intel NUC. Save it to a USB portable device.
  4. Get your Windows image ready (purchased separately), on either a USB portable device or on a CD/DVD.

See the table for special information you should know before you begin installing the operating system. If your Intel NUC model isn't listed in this table, there are no additional special instructions and you can proceed directly to the installation steps.

Windows® 10 If you plan to install both a hard drive and Intel® Optane™ Memory, Windows® 10 must be installed on the hard drive. Don't install Windows 10 on the Intel Optane Memory module.

Check these BIOS settings (and change if necessary):

  1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to set all BIOS options to default values.
  3. Select Advanced.
  • On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, Chipset SATA Mode to AHCI.
  • On the Boot > Boot Priority menu, in the Legacy Boot Priority pane, Legacy Boot is disabled (unchecked).
  • On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, in the UEFI Boot pane, OS Selection is set to Windows 8.x/Windows 10.
  1. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.

Proceed with the installation of the operating system.

OpenElec

Tested with the development build at OpenElec. Check these BIOS settings (and change if necessary)

  1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to set all BIOS options to default values.
  3. Select Advanced.
  • On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, Chipset SATA Mode is set to AHCI.
  • On the Devices and Peripherals > USB menu, USB Legacy is enabled (checked).
  • On the Devices and Peripherals > Video menu, IGD Minimum Memory is set to 512 MB.
  • On the Boot > Boot Priority menu:
    • UEFI Boot is disabled (unchecked).
    • Legacy Boot is enabled (checked).
  • On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, USB under Boot Devices is enabled (checked).
  1. Press F10 to save your changes and exit BIOS Setup.


Proceed with the installation of the operating system.

Install Windows*

  1. Plug in the device with the Windows installation image (USB port or USB optical drive, if the Windows image is on a CD/DVD).
  2. Power on the Intel NUC.
  3. At the prompt during boot, press F10 to open the boot menu and select the installation drive.
  4. Windows Setup starts. Follow all setup instructions.

After installation is complete

  1. After Windows Setup is complete, install the wired or wireless network driver you downloaded in Step 3.
  2. Connect to the Internet.
  3. Install Windows updates (optional).
  4. Download and install the rest of the Intel NUC drivers from Download Center.
