Reiner Birkl is a research scientist on the Embodied AI team with Michael Paulitsch. He joined Intel in September 2022 and currently conducts research on generative AI in computer vision. In this context, he has worked on different types of transformers in a now available new release, v3.1 of the Intel Labs depth estimation framework MiDaS.

Prior to Intel, Birkl worked on the BMW autonomous driving project as a software developer at Bertrandt where he was involved in machine learning topics like object detection and deep reinforcement learning for controlling simulated cars in the Unreal engine. His academic background is physics. Birkl completed a Ph.D in Astrophysics at the Technical University of Munich.
