About Back-Annotating Assignments

Back-annotation allows you to copy device and resource assignments made during compilation into the Quartus II Settings File (.qsf), thereby preserving the current fit for future compilations. You can use the Back-Annotate Assignments dialog box  to preserve pin, cell, routing, device, and LogicLock region assignments through back-annotation.

The following sections provide more details about preserving specific assignment types using back-annotation.

Note: Altera recommends using incremental compilation to preserve synthesis and fitting results in preference to back-annotation. Additionally, back-annotation of LogicLock region nodes in a non-incremental compilation design flow is not supported for Cyclone IV, Stratix IV, and Stratix V devices.
