Why does the Hybrid Memory Cube example design not generate in Quartus Prime Pro 17.1 when configured with 8 Lanes ?

The Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) IP can be configured for either full width mode (16 lanes) or half width mode (8 lanes).

Due to a problem with the HMC example design in Quartus® Prime Pro 17.1, it does not generate when configured with 8 lanes and shows an error message :

Error: Failed to generate example design example_design to: <directory_path>

There is no workaround in Quartus Prime Pro 17.1.
This problem is scheduled to be fixed in a future release of the Quartus Prime software.

HMC example designs will generate successfully using these width configurations and Quartus versions:

• Quartus Prime Pro all supported versions using full width configuration
• Quartus Prime Pro versions before 17.1 using half width configuration
• Quartus Prime Standard all supported versions using half or full width configuration
