Why does sof2flash, elf2flash,elf2hex and bin2flash fail when run on a Windows PC?

Description

Due to a problem in the Quartus II software® version 13.1,  some of the NIOS® II EDS utilities may fail with no error output or messages when run on a Windows PC.

The affected utilities are: sof2flash, elf2flash, elf2hex and bin2flash

 

Resolution

To work around this problem in the Quartus II software version 13.1 on Windows:

  • After opening the NIOS II Terminal, set an environment varibable called QUARTUS_BINDIR to /bin
    • export QUARTUS_BINDIR=/bin
  • Open the Nios II Command Shell from Qsys via the Tools menu, then run the required utility
  • Run the required utility from a Linux installation of the Quartus II software version 13.1

This problem is currently scheduled to be fixed in a future version of the Quartus II software, and this solution will be updated as other workarounds are finalised.
