[Critical][RST 19.5] RAID 1/5/10 Array Failure Causes Data Corruption

Content Type: Troubleshooting   |   Article ID: 000099952   |   Last Reviewed: 10/23/2024

Environment

Operating System

Windows 11* Family, Windows® 10 family

Description

Intel has identified a problem with the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) software that can cause incorrect reporting of a RAID1/5/10 volume status when a SATA drive is unplugged during an active I/O transfer in an operational system. Specifically, the RST incorrectly reports the volume status as Failed instead of Degraded, resulting in blocked access to the data.

The affected RST releases are 19.5, 20.0, and 20.1. However, RST 20.2 does include a fix for the issue.

Resolution

In the short term, Intel recommends the following resolutions:

  • Do not use the Hot Plug feature for any SATA drive that is part of a RAID1/5/10 volume until 20.2.1_Win10_SV2_24H2 PV in WW48.1’24 is available for end users.
  • If it is not possible to avoid using the Hot Plug feature, ensure that the drive is not removed during active or ongoing I/O transfers.
  • Impacted users should use RST 20.1.2_HF_Win10_24H2 build in WW43.5’24 with recovery action to restore access to user data.
ScenarioUser observationRecovery user actions
RAID 1/5/10 Data DriveUser Data on the Data Drive RAID1/5 cannot be accessed by user. Volume is reported as Failed
  1. Install 20.1.2 HF Release.
  2. RST will automatically recover RAID 1/5/10 Volume status during first system restart and re-enable access to data.
  3. Rebuild the RAID with healthy SATA drive
RAID 1/5/10 OS Boot Drive - SystemSystem is not able to boot from RAID1/5 volume. Volume is reported as Failed
  1. Boot to WinPE image from USB pendrive
  2. Load 20.1.2 HF Release by F6 method
  3. RST will automatically correct status of boot RAID 1/5/10 Volume and re-enable boot from RAID volume
  4. Cancel installation process, Remove WinPE USB Pendrive and Reboot the System. Boot to previous OS version.
  5. Rebuild the RAID with healthy SATA drive

In the long term, Intel recommends upgrading to the following  maintenance releases, as these include the fix. OEMs are also advised to upgrade all impacted systems in the field.

  • 19.5.7_ Win10_SV1_SV2 MR in WW50.5’24
  • 20.2.1_Win10_SV2_24H2 PV in WW48.1’24
