Summary

Steps to solve problems establishing VPN connection using Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201.

Description

The Windows® 11 VPN Client fails to establish a VPN connection to the company's network and Windows® Event Viewer shows the log "Event 20227 RassClient 'The error code returned on failure is 720.'"

There are no other network issues since regular Internet access and Local Area Network (LAN) access work fine, it is just the VPN that fails to establish a VPN connection.

Reinstalling the WAN Miniport (IP) interface drivers does not help and when connecting using a USB Wi-Fi dongle the VPN works fine through it. This seems to indicate there is a driver issue with the Intel® Wireless card.

Resolution

Follow the steps below to resolve this problem:

  1. Update the Operating System, refer to Update Windows*.
  2. Install/update to the latest drivers for both components: Wireless and Bluetooth. Contact the computer manufacturer (OEM) for the latest driver updates. If drivers are not available from the OEM, browse for the appropriate driver on Download Center. Perform a clean installation:
    1. Refer to How to Perform a Clean Installation of Bluetooth Drivers and Clean Installation of Wireless Drivers.
Note: During the clean installation process, after uninstalling the current drivers and before installing the latest drivers, you may need to clear out your temporary files:
      1. Press the Windows* Key + R to open the run box.
      2. Type Cleanmgr.exe and press OK. Here you will need to make sure Temporary Files are checked, you may uncheck everything else, then press OK.
      3. Reboot your computer and proceed to install the drivers.
    2. We recommend installing the Bluetooth driver first, followed by the wireless driver.
  3. Contact the OEM to check if there is a BIOS update available for the system. The OEM support team may assist with the BIOS update instructions.
  4. Refer to Microsoft's Documentation Error 720: Can't connect to a VPN Connection" when you try to establish a VPN connection and contact Microsoft® Support for additional assistance.
  5. Contact your company's Information Technology (IT) personnel to verify the network access of your system.
Additional information

The driver or software for your Intel® component might have been changed or replaced by the computer manufacturer (OEM). We recommend trying first the customized drivers from the OEM and working with your computer manufacturer before installing our generic drivers so you don’t lose features or customizations.
