Intel® NVMe* SSD Not Detected in an Intel® VMD-Capable Platform

Environment

Windows 11* Family, Windows® 10 family

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

The Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) driver version 18.0 and later support Intel® Volume Management Device (Intel® VMD) technology capable platforms.

Description

Issues encountered:

  • The Intel® Optane™ SSD 900P Series is not detected during the OS installation, not even after installing the latest Intel NVMe driver.
  • Performed secure erase on the 900p (480gb) prior to installation, but still not recognized.
  • The drive does not show up as plugged into the PCIe* connector within the connected devices list, but it does when referring to the settings of the IO ports within the non RAID Physical disks of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
Resolution

The Intel® RST driver version 18.0 and later support Intel® VMD technology capable platforms. For Intel VMD-capable platforms, this driver is required to properly enable Intel VMD on a given port.

  • If Intel VMD is enabled on the port where the SSD not being detected is connected, it is necessary to install the latest Intel RST driver provided by the motherboard or system manufacturer.
  • If Intel VMD is not enabled, the drive should be recognized during the OS installation without requiring any additional drivers.
