Environment

Intel® Optane™ Memory | Intel® Optane™ SSDs

Description

Cannot determine if the Intel® Optane™ Memory and Intel® Optane™ SSDs are compatible with RAID setups.

Resolution

Intel® Optane™ devices are divided in two groups. Each of them has different intended uses.

GroupDescription
Intel® Optane™ SSD

Intel® Optane™ SSDs are storage devices. As with any other SSD, they can be used to setup RAID volumes.

Intel® Optane™ MemoryIntel® Optane™ memory is a system acceleration solution installed between the processor and slower storage devices (SATA HDD, SSHD, SSD) to enable the computer to store commonly used data and programs closer to the processor. This allows the system to access this information more quickly, which can improve overall system responsiveness. Intel® Optane™ memory devices are not storage devices, so they cannot be used to set up RAID volumes nor to accelerate them. However, an Intel® Optane™ memory volume can reside in the same system as a RAID volume.

How can I differentiate Intel® Optane™ SSD from Intel® Optane™ memory?

  • All Intel® Optane™ SSDs are labeled as SSDs. For example: Intel® Optane™ SSD 905P Series or Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4800X Series.
  • All Intel® Optane™ Memory devices are labeled as memory. For example: Intel® Optane™ Memory M10 Series or Intel® Optane™ Memory H10 with Solid State Storage.
