Summary

Steps to update the firmware in an Intel® Server Board through the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) using a universal serial bus (USB)

Description

Is there a specific way to update the firmware in an Intel® Server Board through the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC)?

Resolution
  1. Log in.
  2. Enter the configured Internet Protocol (IP) address of the Intel® Remote Management Module 4 (Intel® RMM4) or the configured BMC onboard Network Interface Card (NIC) into the web browser to open the Integrated BMC web console module login page.
    Note

To use a secure connection, type: https:///.

  3. Enter the username and password and select a language option.

    For example:

    • Username: root
    • Password: superuser
    • Language: English
  4. Click the Login button to view the home page.
    Note

After the initial login, system administrators may change passwords and create new users and have full control over access to the Intel® Remote Management Module 4 (Intel® RMM4)–enabled advanced features.

Launching the Redirection Console

  1. Launch the remote console KVM redirection window by clicking Launch Console from the Remote Control tab of the Integrated BMC web console.
  2. When the Launch Console button is clicked, a pop-up window is displayed to download the Java Network Launch Protocol launch.jnlp file. This in turn downloads the standalone Java application implementing the remote console.
    Note

Java Runtime Environment* (JRE*, Version 6 Update 22 or higher) must be installed on the client before the launch of a Java Network Launch Protocol (JNLP) file. The client browser must allow pop-up windows from the Integrated BMC web console IP address.

  3. The remote console window is a Java Applet* that establishes TCP connections to the Integrated BMC web console.

Virtual Media Menu

  1. Click Virtual Media in the remote console control bar to open the virtual storage.
  2. In the Logical Drive Type, select the USB mounted in the Localhost, and click in Plugin.
  3. Confirm that the USB was mounted successfully.

Once it is mounted, the firmware update process can be done by following the steps in the Demo for Performing Firmware Update on EFI* Shell Intel® Server Board and Intel® Server System Product Families.
