Description

There are many messages about the CPUs throttling.

The following are examples:

Mar 15 17:34:14 rl043 kernel: CPU8: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1)
Mar 15 17:34:14 rl043 kernel: CPU36: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1)
Mar 15 17:34:14 rl043 kernel: CPU6: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1)
Mar 15 17:34:14 rl043 kernel: CPU34: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1)
Mar 15 17:34:14 rl043 kernel: CPU41: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1)
Resolution

Proceed as follows:

  1. Ensure the BIOS is up to date. For updating instructions
  2. Reboot the system into the board BIOS [see BIOS Setup Utility Guide for Intel® Server Systems].
  3. Go to Advanced > System Acoustic and Performance Configuration menu and proceed as follows:
    1. Select Performance as the Set Fan Profile option.
    2. Try any of the Fan Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Offset settings from 0 to 100. Keep in mind that the higher the number, the noisier the system may become.
