Working with User-Defined Devices

A user-defined device is any device not made by Altera that can be added to the JTAG chain in the Quartus II software. You must specify the properties of the user-defined device, such as register lengths and the JTAG ID code, within the Programmer for the Quartus II software to recognize the device. The properties of a user-defined device are stored within a Once you add the device to a JTAG chain and define it, the Programmer can treat the device as a bypass device and work around it while programming other devices.

Open the Chain Description File (.cdf) you want to edit.
In the Programmer, click Add Device.
To define a user-defined device, follow these steps:
1. In the Select Devices dialog box, click New.
2. In the New Device dialog box, specify the name of the user-defined device, the instruction register length, and the JTAG ID.
Under Instruction register, type or select the length of the instruction register for the user-defined device.
Click Add JTAG ID to add a JTAG ID to the JTAG ID list, and follow these steps:
1. In the Configuration device JTAG ID (32-bit hexadecimal) box, type a configuration device JTAG ID and JTAG ID mask for the user-defined device.
2. Click OK.
If there are versions of this device that do not have JTAG IDs, turn on Allow none to identify them as belonging to this device.
Click OK.
If you want, you can export the user-defined device in a Quartus User-Defined Device File.

Open the Chain Description File (.cdf) you want to edit.
In the Programmer, click Add Device.
Create or import a user-defined device, as described in the next section.
In the Select Devices dialog box, under Device family, select User Defined.
Under Device name, select the user-defined device you want to edit.
Click Edit.
Under Instruction register, type or select the length of the instruction register for the user-defined device.

Click Add JTAG ID to specify a JTAG ID and JTAG ID mask.
In the Configuration device JTAG ID (32-bit hexadecimal) box, type a configuration device JTAG ID and JTAG ID mask for the user-defined device.
Click OK.
If there are versions of this device that do not have JTAG IDs, turn on Allow none to identify them as belonging to this device.
Click OK.
If you want, you can export the user-defined device in a Quartus User-Defined Device File.

If you want to import a user-defined device, follow these steps:
1. Open the Chain Description File you want to edit.
2. In the Programmer, click Add Device.
3. Click Import.
4. In the Import User-Defined Device dialog box, specify the Quartus User-Defined Device File you want to import.
5. Click OK.
If you want to export a user-defined device, follow these steps:
1. In the Select Devices dialog box or the Select New Device dialog box, click Export.
2. In the Export User-Defined Device dialog box, specify the Quartus User-Defined Device File you want to import.
3. Click OK.
