How to Choose a 3D Animation System

One hurdle standing between you and a great Cinema 4D experience is finding the right computer. You need a system with plenty of processing power and memory capacity to help ensure 3D applications do not freeze up or crash. Your system should let you seamlessly integrate 3D scans, prebuilt configurations, and software into the workflow. You want smart tools that automate image denoising and speed up ray tracing. Of course, the wired and wireless connections should support high-bandwidth, high-speed traffic. And no one wants a system that takes so long to render a final scene that you have time to make coffee, take the dog for a walk, and mow the lawn.

Get a Workstation That Enriches Your Creative Experience

Intel workstations come in a variety of configurations, all of which deliver outstanding performance and interoperability for Cinema 4D. So, choose the desktop or mobile workstation that helps you do your best work, whenever inspiration hits and wherever you happen to be.

  • Mobile workstations: Laptop workstations provide the ultimate mobile platform for demanding 3D animations and visual effects.
  • Entry workstations: Tower, all-in-one (AIO), small, and mini form factors let users choose the workstations they prefer for 3D content creation, including animation, film, video, and multimedia.
  • Mainstream workstations: Configurable tower workstations deliver high performance for 3D animations, game development, film/video editing and production, and multimedia authoring.
  • Expert workstations: Expandable tower workstations provide the highest level of performance and scalability for the most demanding 3D animations, 8K film editing and production, and live broadcasts.

Explore the Creative Potential of Cinema 4D

Intel-based workstations are purpose-built for the most extreme 3D animation workloads. To illustrate the power and versatility of Intel-based workstations, let’s introduce three professional animators. Each artist has a different creative style, but they all rely on Cinema 4D and Intel technologies to build fantastic 3D animations.

Marc Potocnik used Cinema 4D running on an Intel® Xeon® processor–based workstation to create breathtaking 3D reality in his project, “Apollinarisstr” (Ingredients to Realism). His ambitious artistic goal was to build, from scratch, a 3D, animated scene that resembled a found-footage film clip. To evoke realism, he introduced photorealistic images, naturalistic lighting, and handheld camera shakiness.

The Intel® Xeon® processor smoothly handled dense 3D scenes containing 12 million polygons. 25 GB of memory accelerated rendering for subsurface scattering, area shadows, ambient occlusion, and blurred transparencies. Using the Intel Embree ray-tracing library, Marc was able to reduce rendering time by nearly 50 percent.2 Before final rendering, he cleaned up the scene with Intel Open Image Denoise. Open Image Denoise applied machine learning (ML) algorithms and deep learning (DL) filters to the tedious task of denoising, saving Marc hours of manual labor.

Cinema 4D animator Can Erduman prefers an Intel® Core™ processor–based mobile workstation so he can split the workday between his home office and a shared office space. He exemplifies a growing number of 3D creators who prefer a hybrid work environment.

His workstation’s high-performance CPU and high-capacity memory allow him to develop 3D workflows to the point of output processing, so he can work on pre-production, scene creation, lighting and rendering, and post-production in the quiet comfort of his kitchen. The workstation has plenty of CPU power to support a high-end graphics card, allowing him to apply graphics processing unit (GPU)-rendered Redshift effects. When his scenes are ready to be assembled for final rendering, Can carries his laptop to the shared office space and plugs it into an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. He connects the laptop to a high-speed network dock that gives him access to cloud-based rendering.3

Professional artist Stefan Voigt uses his Intel® Xeon® processor–based workstation to seamlessly integrate 3D scans, high dynamic range image (HDRI) lighting setups, rendering software, and plug-ins into his Cinema 4D workflow. He created the mesmerizing 3D animated scene, “Elemental Form,” relatively quickly using prebuilt volume objects and preconfigured lighting setups.

To get started, he imported 3D photogrammetry objects directly into his workflow. Gluing together thousands of anchor points to create a natural-looking landscape takes plenty of CPU processing. For rendering, Stefan used Adobe Photoshop, Quixel Mixer, Intel Embree, Open Image Denoise, and Adobe After Effects.4

Improve Your Creation Experience with the Latest Connection Technologies

It goes without saying that you need high-bandwidth, high-speed data connections for accessing media storage, cloud services, network printers, 8K monitors, and streaming servers.

  • Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E offers the latest connectivity technology, so you don’t have to compete with legacy devices, baby monitors, or microwaves for network access5
  • Thunderbolt™ 4 provides expandability at high bandwidth for connecting high-speed devices6
  • HDMI/DisplayPort connections enable you to connect multiple displays at high resolution.

Let Your Ingenuity Run Free

Purpose-built Intel-based workstations have the functionality to help professional 3D artists create amazing virtual worlds in Cinema 4D. Whether you are working on an extremely complex scene with millions of polygons or are flexibly bridging your home-to-office work environments, there is an Intel workstation to meet your needs.
