All DER (Distributed Energy Resources) which includes Inverters, Energy Storage units, EV Charging stations etc need to send Telemetry Data to the grid interconnected Utility over IEEE 20305 protocol. IEEE 2030.5 is a secure, scalable, and consumer-friendly application-layer protocol built upon standard Internet protocols and recommended by IEEE 1547 Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of DERs with Associated Electric Power Systems Interfaces. Kalki.io act as DER Aggregator to collect telemetry data as well as send commands and settings to DER devices. Kalki.io DER Aggregator / Data Hub is a software component which enable DER Asset owners, Developers, and System integrators to integrate DER sites with utilities directly. DER providers need not bother about the device specific protocols & data exchange complexities. Inverters, Energy Storage units, EV charging units and PCC meters are supplied by multiple vendors supporting different communication protocol for data exchange and device management. Because of the wide connectivity requirement applications utilities cannot directly collect data from field devices. Kalki.io connects with these assets on device specific protocol and convert it to IEEE2030.5 required as per the standard. Moreover, some of the regional specific working groups, California Smart Inverter Implementation Working Group (SIWG) also published “Common Smart inverter Profile” based on IEEE2030.5 for inverter communications. Further to CPUC regulations, the California IOUs are required to provide customers with a low-cost customer owned telemetry option to send telemetry data to the Utility. DER Site Gateway is SunSpec Certified IEEE 2030.5 Gateways. The DER gateway is used to interconnect Distributed Energy Resource (DER) site with the utility headend system, and DER Aggregators over IEEE 2030.5, DNP3, or IEC 104. Gateways can communicate with the DER devices on-site e.g., smart inverter or Energy Management System (EMS) using any of the communication interfaces defined in IEEE 1547-2018 (Sunspec Modbus, Modbus, DNP3, and IEEE 2030.5). Common Smart Inverter Profile (CSIP) certified IEEE 2030.5 aggregator client support in the gateway helps the utility monitor and control any DER locations using DERMS, ADMS, VPP applications regardless of the communication capability of the field devices thereby reducing overall interconnection costs.
