Phase 1: Prepare Well

Take AI to the Next Level in Retail

Before looking into technological solutions, there is foundational groundwork to be done. These preparatory steps are essential to achieving business value from an AI project.

  1. Focus on data, data and more data. Understand that the business value of AI-powered edge computing lies in data. Without data, there can be no valid AI. Inventory your retail environment—physical premises, online or both—and see what data you are already collecting. Are there ways to collect more data? How are you integrating disparate sources of data? Both data quantity and data quality are important. AI models provide accurate results only if they are trained on large datasets. And poor-quality data, such as mislabeled images or inconsistencies, produce poor-quality results. It will take time and effort—and monetary outlay—to get your data ready, but it is the most important aspect of preparing for an AI project. Don’t forget to plan on how you will store data—how much storage capacity will you need? How long will you store it? How will you protect it?

2. Discover the art of the possible. AI is a huge topic and has many aspects. Familiarize yourself with the main concepts, such as natural language processing (NLP), computer vision and recommendation engines. You don’t need to be able to create a neural network or write code; but you do need to understand how the various forms of AI could relate to your specific retail business model and customer needs. Share what you learn with others in the company.

3. Learn from others. Consider reading case studies of other retailers’ successful AI projects. What hurdles and unforeseen challenges did they deal with? How did they approach project management? What would they do differently next time around?
