An Introduction to Celadon
For Android* developers interested in creating the latest applications such as digital signage, smart terminal, or automotive IVI, Celadon is an optimized and validated software reference stack that has the flexibility for such customizations and enables an Android experience tuned for Intel® architecture.
Learn more about Celadon.
Hi. I'm Melissa Evers-Hood from Intel. And in this video, I'm going to tell you a little bit about Celadon and how Android* developers can use it to develop some of the latest edge to cloud and AI applications. So what is Celadon?
Celadon is an open-source software project that enables developers like you to build Android stacks for Android applications and Google services. For Android developers who want to build products for innovative use cases like digital signage, smart terminal, or automotive IVI, Celadon is an optimized and validated software reference stack that has the flexibility for such customizations, tuned for Intel architecture, and is all open source. Did I also mentioned that the latest release fully passes Google's test suites? Yep, that's a big deal.
Every year at Intel's Google I/O Day Zero Event, we aim to inspire and help developers get started with new projects by showcasing the latest innovations and developer resources. In 2019, we highlighted new usages from cloud to edge to device, AI, cloud gaming, and more. For example, we showed a cloud gaming platform running Android in a container, which shows how a developer can accelerate mobile game performance in the cloud. Android and Linux* containers maximize your Android instances on a single server and deliver an optimized solution for cloud service providers. On the device front, we showcased several Chrome OS* and Chrome* browser demos including new use cases such as Linux running on Chrome OS, the breadth of Android applications available, and impressive performance metrics.
Let's take a deeper look at how Celadon is helping our automotive partners go to market and be successful. In vehicle infotainment systems can help drivers manage navigation, phone calls, climate control, windows, doors, and other parts of the driving experience. Developers can use an Intel® NUC to accelerate their development and simplify the prototyping for next generation IVI solutions. Artificial intelligence inside the vehicle can also assist in monitoring driver behavior, helping prevent distracted driving. We applied Celadon, Intel® RealSense™, OpenVINO™, and Intel® Movidius™ Myriad™ X to detect driver distraction and report it up to the cloud.
Intel invests in Android not only across the automotive industry, but also across edge markets, such as smart terminal facial authentication and retail digital signage. Let's look at smart terminal first. From airports to concerts, the need for enhanced security and facial authentication gives rise to new IoT applications for smart terminals.
By using both wireless connectivity and AI for facial authentication, smart terminals provide a means for surveillance and security at homes, libraries, daycare facilities, hospitals, airports, and smart cities. There are benefits to smart terminal IoT solutions because vision-based edge computing can be accelerated, thereby improving real-time security and authentication. In the smart terminal demo at Intel's Google I/O Day Zero Event, we showed a fast prototyping Android solution with AI to provide facial authentication on Celadon, which could be used to open a door.
Another hot retail use case is digital displays. As end-users increasingly seek visually immersive experiences, the demand for more vivid, high-resolution displays generates the need for businesses and consumers to utilize digital signage. These solutions can be regularly updated remotely, increasing uptime and availability. At the 2019 Day Zero Event, Now Micro showcased a digital signage with an Intel NUC and Celadon to optimize performance.
While we showed a few examples from automotive, smart terminal, and digital signage, the possibilities for innovation on Celadon are endless and as broad as the market. Celadon enables you, as the developer, to take advantage of the best of Google services, the Android app ecosystem, and open source to build Android products optimized for Intel architecture. We've enabled many of the coolest hardware accelerators in Intel's portfolio via Project Celadon. Thanks for watching, check it out in the links, and start innovating.
