Intel® Edge Software Configurator
(Intel® ESC) is downloaded from Intel® Edge Software Hub and installed using edgesoftware CLI.
ESC installation needs command line access to GitHub during installation. Run
to verify the connection before starting the installation.
Follow this Get Started Guide for general requirements and installation procedures.

Requirements for
Intel® Edge Software Configurator

  • 16 GB of memory
  • 500 GB of storage
  • 2 Ethernet ports

Requirements for Virtual Machine Management

Virtual Machine management has specific system requirements. If you plan on using Virtual Machines, make sure you have the correct settings before proceeding:
  • Internet connection using Ethernet (Wired LAN) network for public Linux* bridge network creation.
  • At least 2 GB is allocated for each Virtual Machine.
  • At least 20 GB of hard disk must be available for each Virtual Machine and 32 GB of hard disk for each Windows Virtual Machine.
  • KVM hypervisor enabled for virtualization environment of the Virtual Machine.
  • Host machine kernel version of 5.0.x or above from official Ubuntu* release.
  • Intel® VT-x enabled in BIOS settings for virtualization technology, where Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) for IA-32, Intel® 64 and Intel® Architecture corresponds to
    Intel® VT-x
  • Intel® VT-d enabled in BIOS setting for I/O virtualization, where Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) for Directed I/O corresponds to
    Intel® VT-d

Supported Processors for Intelligent Desktop Virtualization (IDV)

  • The 8th, 9th, and 10th Generation Intel® Core Processor (Coffee Lake, Coffee Lake Refresh, Whiskey Lake, and Comet Lake) Graphics are recommended.
  • The 6th Generation Intel® Core Processor (Skylake) Graphics is sustained.
Make sure to connect all the required monitors before powering on the system.
Recommended Processors for IDV
  • Intel® i5-9500TE /Coffee Lake Processor.
  • Intel® i7-10710U/Comet Lake Processor.
  • Intel® Xeon® E-2124G/Coffee Lake Processor.
  • Intel® i5-10050/Comet Lake Processor.
  • Intel® i9-9900T/Coffee Lake Processor.
Using the default kernel available on the host machine is recommended, as the configuration of a custom kernel might cause challenges during virtual machine set up.

Requirements for BareMetal Management

BareMetal management has specific system requirements. If you plan on using BareMetal Machines, make sure you have the correct settings before proceeding:
  • Ensure at least 2 CPUs, 20 GB hard disk, and 2 GB of RAM are available for the BareMetal feature only, as part of the minimum requirements for ESC.
  • Enable Network Boot on the BIOS setup of the target node for BareMetal Provisioning.

Requirements for Dual Ethernet Mode

  • At least two Ethernet ports are required for Dual Ethernet mode.
  • Network switch for ESC Private network (Downstream network) on Host device.

Requirements for Single Ethernet Mode

DO NOT RUN ESC ON YOUR CORPORATE NETWORK. Use an isolated network. There can be only one ESC Host device running on the network.
  • Hardware router for ESC Private network.
  • Configure the router to provide DNS service to the network. To test if DNS service is working, attach 2 devices to router's network using LAN cables. Try to ping Device A from Device B using Device A hostname. Ping should be able to resolve the Device A hostname to its IP address.
  • Configure maximum DHCP lease time in the router.
BareMetal provisioning is not supported on Intel Tiger Lake and Coffee Lake processors.
Intel® Edge Software Configurator
reserves the following ports in the Host Machine:
  • 9200-9900: Virtual Machine Server local bind by ports through SSH reverse tunnel. Automatically assigned by Virtual Machine Agent based on the availability.
  • 8888, 80, 443: Edge Software Provisioner for installation of BareMetal Provisioning and Virtual Machine Provisioning.
  • 5900 – 65535: VNC/Spice port for remote display. Automatically assigned by Qemu/Levart based on the availability.
  • 16514 - TLS Libvirt Qemu URI.
  • 3002 –
    Intel® Edge Software Configurator
    User Interface.
  • 5055 –
    Intel® Edge Software Configurator
    Docker* Registry.
  • 8000 – Portainer* service tunnel port.
  • 25826/udp – Used for telemetry data transfer.
