5G services present communication services providers (CSPs) with a great growth opportunity. However, the traditional radio access network (RAN) infrastructure presents an obstacle to realizing 5G-based strategies. Virtualization of RAN functions (vRAN), and eventually open RAN (O-RAN), offer a path forward, through challenges exist for their implementation. New solutions, such as VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN, enable CSPs to modernize RAN infrastructure and make progress on the journey to an open, profitable future.
