Confused about the differences in settings for WEP and WPS?

Purpose of this article
To educate users on the different set up windows that pop up from the Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility in response to the security settings of the AP in the environment.

  • If the AP in your environment uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup*(WPS), the Wi-Fi Protected Setup* Wizard is displayed and used to configure your profile.
  • If the AP in your environment uses WEP, the WEP window is displayed and used to enter the network password.

Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup* Wizard to Setup and Manage a Network
The Wi-Fi Protected Setup Wizard lets you easily configure a new network and add devices to it. Wi-Fi Protected Setup simplifies the set-up process and at the same time helps ensure that the network is configured securely. With Wi-Fi Protected Setup, you can easily do the following tasks:

  • As Enrollee: Acquire security settings and configure your computer/device to connect to an existing network.
  • As Registrar: Configure security settings for a network’s access point and/or add another computer/device to the network.
  • Manual: Do not use Wi-Fi Protected Setup. You will be prompted to manually enter the security settings for the network.

Before you begin
You need to have Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software installed on your computer.

If you already have Intel PROSet/Wireless Software installed on your computer, skip this section.

If you need to install Intel PROSet/Wireless Software, follow the steps below.

Installing Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software
Typical install of PROSet is enough for Wi-Fi Protected Setup to work.

Accessing the Wi-Fi Protected Setup* Wizard
There are two ways to access the Wi-Fi Protected Setup* Wizard:

  1. Click the alert message that displays when a network with Wi-Fi Protected Setup capability is detected: Devices with Wi-Fi Protected setup capability are within range of your computer. Click to connect.
  2. Click on the Wi-Fi network list on Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility main window.

Depending on the network/AP setting, either the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) Wizard or the Wireless Security Password (WPS) window is displayed.

Configuring WEP
When WEP is enabled in a network, the window that is being displayed to enter the WEP password to connect to the network, looks like the below screen shot.

When WEP data encryption is enabled, a network key or password is used for encryption.

When WEP encryption is enabled on an access point, the WEP key is used to verify access to the network. If the wireless device does not have the correct WEP key, even though authentication is successful, the device is unable to transmit data through the access point or decrypt data received from the access point.
