How Many Hard Disk Drives can I Use with My System?

The Intel® Entry Storage System SS4200-E supports configurations with two (2) or four (4) hard disk drives only. One or three hard disk drives are not a supported configuration.

Arrays are configured automatically depending on the number of disk drives detected on the first boot. With two hard disk drives, the system will create a RAID 1, "Mirror" array. With four disk drives, the system will create a RAID 5, "Parity" array.

With four disk drives installed, after the RAID 5 array has completed initialization, the RAID level can be migrated to a RAID 0+1 array, sometimes called RAID 10 array.

Changing the Data Protectionáscheme is data destructive.áBefore you can switch data protection schemes, you must delete all data from the Entry Storage System device by removing all Shared Folders. Backup any data you wish to keep then restore after the Data Protectionáscheme change.

With Storage System software 1.1.11.32736, this can be done with the Storage Manager Web UI from the Settings > Disks > Manage Disks > Data Protection page:

When all data from the Entry Storage System has been deleted by removing all Shared Folders, the "Mirror based data protection" radio button will be enabled and selectable.

With Storage System software versions earlier than 1.1.11.32736, this can be done with the Storage Manager Web UI from the Settings > Disks page and selecting the Data Protection link:

It is recommended to install the maximum number of hard disks that you want to use before your system is initialized and configured. You can add more disks later, but changing your disk configuration will require a backup of your data, initialization with the new quantity of hard disk drives and data restore.
