Chipset audio driver information

Where do I get an audio driver for my chipset?
If you have an Intel® motherboard, you can download the latest audio driver for your motherboard.

If your computer uses the Intel® integrated graphics controller and has an HDMI port, you can download the latest graphics driver for your Intel chipset; installing the graphics driver will also install the HDMI audio driver.

Note If you are using Microsoft Windows XP*, you may need to first install KB888111.exe, the Microsoft* UAA High Definition Audio Package version 1.0a.

In all other cases, Intel does not provide an audio driver for your chipset. For drivers and technical support, use the following resources.

  • Intel® High Definition Audio - the driver is a common operating system driver provided by Microsoft*
  • AC'97 - contact your system or motherboard manufacturer
  • CNR and AMR sound cards - contact your sound card manufacturer (Note: a CNR card refers to a Communications and Networking Riser card, an AMR card refers to an Audio and Modem Riser card)
  • PCI sound cards - contact your sound card manufacturer

What is Intel® High Definition Audio?
Intel High Definition Audio is the next generation integrated audio standard. This new standard replaces the current integrated audio standard, AC'97. Intel High Definition Audio delivers consumer electronic quality audio, while simplifying the user interface and allowing new usage models.

  • Multistreaming - Different audio streams can be sent to different devices.
  • Online Gaming: 5.1 game audio is output through your stereo while game chatting goes through your headset.
  • Digital Home: DVD audio and video is output to the living room TV/stereo while at the computer someone listens to music.
  • Jack Retasking - Audio jack functionality can be automatically reassigned based on the device type being plugged in. For example, when a microphone is plugged into the speaker jack, the system can automatically re-route the microphone data to that jack.

What is AC'97?
Audio Codec '97, or AC'97, is a specification for a high-quality, 16- or 20-bit audio architecture used in many desktop PCs. It has been replaced by the Intel® High Definition Audio specification.
