Why is 'Configuration device <device name> cannot be used with selected programming mode' issued when generating a .pof for AVST mode using the Programming File Generator?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Design Software
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

When one of QSPI Flash ROM devices is selected in the Add Device dialog to generate a .pof for AVST mode using the Programming File Generator, "Configuration device <device name> cannot be used with selected programming mode" will be issued.

The Parallel Flash Loader II (PFL II) of the AVST configuration host supports QSPI flash ROM devices.  However, in generating a .pof for AVST mode, even when QSPI flash ROM is used for PFL II, an equivalent size of CFI flash device (CFI_<size>) must be selected in the Add Device dialog.

For example, even when MT25QU02G (2Gb QSPI ROM) is used, CFI_2Gb must be selected in the Add Device dialog.

Due to a problem in the Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 24.1 and earlier,  QSPI Flash ROMs are unnecessarily listed in the Add Device dialog.

    Resolution

Select an equivalent size of CFI flash device (CFI_<size>) in the Add Device dialog of the Programming File Generator even when AVST mode is used and QSPI flash ROM device is used for PFL II.

A future version of the Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software will be improved and QSPI flash ROM devices will be removed from the Add Device dialog of the Programming File Generator when AVST mode is selected.
