Why can't the Quartus II software access my network license server through a firewall?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

Firewall configurations may prevent the Quartus® II software from communicating with FLEXlm license servers. The following messages may also be generated in the license server debug log:

(alterad) TCP_NODELAY NOT enabled
Resolution

If a FLEXlm license server is hosted behind a firewall, assign specific ports for the mgcld and alterad daemons and the FLEXlm license server process within the license file:

SERVER <Server Name> <host/NIC ID> <License server port number>
Vendor alterad <path to daemon> port=<user defined port number>
Vendor mgcld <path to daemon> port=<user defined port number>

For example:

SERVER myServer 0123456789ab 2700
Vendor alterad ./alterad port=2702
Vendor mgcld ./mgcld port=2702

Note:

  1. Port Numbers in the FLEXlm Auto Assign region 27000-28000 should not be used
  2. Firewalls may need to be configued to open up the ports used
