Why do I get a NIC or hostid of FFFFFFFFFFFF when I use the FLEXlm utilities?

Environment

Description You may see a NIC or hostid of FFFFFFFFFFFF when running the FLEXlm utilities if the IPX/SPX driver is not loaded on your machine.

The steps for installing the IPX/SPX driver are as follows:

Windows 95/98

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-Click on the Network icon and select the Configuration tab.
  3. Click the Add button. A dialog box will prompt you to confirm the configuration type. Select Protocol, and confirm by clicking the Add button. The available protocols will appear. Select Microsoft under the manufacturer heading, and then choose the IPX/SPX protocol. Accept the selection by clicking the OK button. If the necessary files are not on your hard drive, insert the Microsoft Windows 95/98 CD-ROM to install the driver.
  4. When the driver is installed, close all the open dialog boxes and restart the computer.

Windows NT

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network icon and select the Protocols tab.
  3. Click the Add button. The available protocols will appear. Select the IPX/SPX protocol and accept your selection by clicking the OK button. If the necessary files are not on your hard drive, insert the Microsoft Windows NT CD-ROM to install the driver.
  4. After the driver is installed, close all the open dialog boxes and restart the computer.

You will need Administrator privileges to install the IPX/SPX driver on a Windows NT machine.
