Frame presentation stutter in Minecraft with Sodium on Intel Arc discrete GPUs

Windows 11* Family

Description

When playing Minecraft with the Sodium optimization mod on systems using Intel Arc discrete graphics, users may observe erratic frame presentation or stutter when Sodium’s CPU render-ahead / frames-in-flight setting is configured to a low value.

This setting is enabled by default in affected Sodium versions. It is not a binary on/off option; it is a numeric slider with values from 0 through 9. The default value is 3, and values below 4 may result in erratic frame presentation on affected systems.

In version 26.2, Sodium changed the default configuration to values that work around this behavior and removed the user-facing ability to modify the setting. Therefore, no user action is required for version 26.2 and later.

Resolution

Workaround for Sodium/Minecraft version 26.1 and earlier:

  • Open Sodium’s video/performance settings.
  • Locate the CPU Render Ahead or Frames in Flight setting.
  • Increase the value from the default of 3 to 4 or higher.
  • Apply the change and restart Minecraft if prompted.

Values of 4 through 9 avoid the problematic low frames-in-flight configuration. Users may choose a higher value as needed based on their responsiveness and smoothness preference.
