Error Message “NMI Activated – System Halted” When Using Some NVMe* Drives

Content Type: Error Messages   |   Article ID: 000099982   |   Last Reviewed: 11/21/2024

Environment

NVMe SSDs that support MCTP Intel® Virtual RAID Over CPU (Intel® VROC)

Description

My system freezes with the error message Nmi activated - system halted

Resolution

This may be due to a compatibility issue between SSDs that support the Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) and Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC)

This error message and a system halt may be encountered if the following conditions are met:

  • Using NVMe* drives that support MCTP over SMBus/PCIe*, to provide management information, and
  • VROC / VMD is enabled in the BIOS, and
  • NVMe* drives are plugged into CPU 1

MCTP Proxy is not compatible with Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC) / Intel® Volume Management Device (VMD).

Note

NVMe* drives that do not support MCTP can be used with VROC / VMD enabled without causing an NMI/System Halt.

Additional information

For information on which drives support MCTP, contact the drive manufacturer.
