The Resolution Scaling Factor used by the XeSS algorithm depends on which of the different presets available you choose in a particular game.

The XeSS presets are: Performance, Balanced, Quality and Ultra Quality and its scaling factors are: 2x, 1.7x, 1.5x, 1.3x respectively.

If you set your game resolution to 1920x1080 and set XeSS to Performance, the base resolution used to render the frames will be 960x540 (1920/2 x 1080/2).

This menas the GPU needs to work less in this mode, as it needs to render less pixels, thus generating more frames per second.

On the other hand, Quality mode results in a little better image as it has more original pixels to work with.
