While Using Linux-6.0 on Void Linux*, the Intel A750 Only Loads the DMC Firmware and Fails While Loading the GUC Firmware

Description

On Void Linux, using Linux-6.0, the Intel A750 only loads the DMC firmware and fails to load the GUC firmware. Mesa-22.1 is only available, while mesa-22.2. Trying the current software versions, Xorg will initialize using the modesetting driver. However, I only get a black display/monitor/screen. Users report that mesa-22.2 is needed for the DRM driver, regardless of whether you use a 2D display without 3D/acceleration.

Resolution

To fix it, use Sway. Sway is a tiling Wayland compositor and a drop-in replacement for the i3 window manager for X11.

  • Sway, Void Linux kernel 6.0.7_1 version, i915.force_probe Linux cmdline option, and the older default installed dg2_dmc 2022.10.22 linux-firmware.

Additionally troubleshooting:

  • No graphical mouse pointer or invisible mouse pointer:
    1. $ export WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1 && sway --verbose
    2. If the DISPLAY variable is initialized, for example, within $HOME/.bashrc or $HOME/.bash_profile file, ensure the $DISPLAY variable is not set $ unset DISPLAY

NoteThe package releasing this soon is with 5.x kernel. Both 20.04 and 22.04 will have a supported 5.x kernel. This package does not officially support any 6.x kernel. We did not get full support into 6.0 OOB, but 6.1 should have full support.
