How to Get a UN38.3 Test Summary Report for Lithium Batteries Contained in Intel® Products

Important

Please be aware of changes to the IATA DGR for 2023. The 64th Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations will, among other things, include a revision removing the need for a UN38.3 Test Summary Report for shipments of lithium coin cells installed in equipment. The change is effective January 1, 2023. Please be aware of this change and note that Intel will no longer be providing the test summary reports for lithium coin cells installed in equipment after that date.

To obtain a UN38.3 Test Summary Report for an Intel product with rechargeable lithium-ion battery:

Contact the Dangerous Good Transportation Program Managers at hazmattransportation@intel.com

  • Add in the email header: Request for UN38.3 Test Summary Report
  • Ensure the Intel Finished Goods number (Material Master number) and/or the battery part number is included in the correspondence.

The Dangerous Good Transportation Program Managers will contact the department that holds the Test Summary Reports and email them to the requestor within 2 business days after receiving the request.

Additional information

All Intel NUC and server products include a coin cell lithium battery which is installed on the circuit board. Intel NUC laptop kits also include a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that is used to supply power to the device when it is not connected to the external power supply.

The UN38.3 Test Summary Report is a condensed version of the full UN38.3 Test Report. The UN38.3 Summary Report is a document that is completed by battery manufacturers that certifies their battery is safe for transport. The summary report for the Intel NUC laptop kits rechargeable lithium-ion batteries is to be made available upon request throughout the supply chain and this can be provided by the original battery manufacturer or subsequent distributors of the battery throughout the supply chain

Additional considerations to keep in mind about the UN38.3 Test Summary Report:

  • The UN38.3 Test Report and the UN38.3 Test Summary Report are different documents.
  • The UN38.3 Test Summary Report is NOT part of the documentation required to transport lithium batteries.
  • Sometimes the UN38.3 Test Summary Report can be found online using an internet search.
  • If the manufacturer of the battery is known, individuals can attempt to obtain the report from the manufacturer.
  • The UN38.3 Test Summary Report is not required to be provided in real time.
  • Shipments of lithium batteries do not need to be held up due to missing UN38.3 Test Summary Reports.
