Risks Related to Disabling Intel® Dynamic Tuning Technology (Intel® DTT) on Laptops with Discrete Graphics

Description

Intel has seen reports of discrete graphics performance variations and unexpected behavior after disabling Intel® Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT). Intel does not recommend disabling, removing, or uninstalling Intel DTT.

Intel DTT customizes CPU and GPU power settings to intelligently adapt power policies based on usage mode and temperature. These power optimization tools provide OEM/ODM engineers with machine learning algorithms to predict workload needs and make dynamic adjustments.

Resolution

Intel does not recommend removing DTT drivers or uninstalling all or part of DTT. DTT settings and modes are defined by the system manufacturer and those settings inform DTT what controls to set as a function of power and temperature along with other system information. DTT parameters are configured by the manufacturer so that the system operates within specifications and limits designed to optimize performance and ensure regulatory compliance and user safety.

DTT parameters are not only designed to prolong battery life, but in some cases systems might exceed external chassis temperature limits if DTT were disabled when a user attempts to operate the laptop at or near the full power limit due to form factor cooling constraints. This may result in higher than designed temperatures.

Additionally, there may be other system constraints managed by DTT, such as system power delivery, acoustics, and component reliability requirements. Violating these limits by removing or stopping DTT functionality could result in unexpected system operation, damaging system components (voltage regulator, storage, memory), or sudden system shutdowns due to power or thermal-related violations.

Using an application developed by the system manufacturer that allows modification of system behavior is an approved method to modify DTT. Often the manufacturer will allow selections of modes such as performance, balanced, and quiet modes. These system mode selections typically will alter the DTT settings within a range that are within the allowed limits of the system and its components.
