What To Do if the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory Is Showing Up As Unmanageable

Content Type: Maintenance & Performance   |   Article ID: 000090010   |   Last Reviewed: 03/03/2025

Environment

Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory

Description

When trying to configure the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory using the ipmctl management utility, the ipmctl show -dimm command output shows the memory cannot be managed.

Resolution

Manageability is the ability for the host software to manage the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory module. An Unmanageable Health State can occur when the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory module has an incompatible firmware API version or hardware revision or is unresponsive.

Manageability is determined by the interface format code, the vendor identifier, device identifier and the firmware API version. Running a quick health diagnostic may help identify the reason for the incompatibility.

If the vendor or device information is incorrect, or the firmware API version is unavailable, and the device is an Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory module, it is likely the module is not responding. This could occur at runtime, for example, if the Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory module is shut down due to a thermal issue. Cooling down the module and restarting may resolve the Unmanageable state. If the module is not responding due to a hardware failure, the module will need to be replaced or removed in order to restore the overall system functionality.
