A “Power Surge on the USB Port” Appears When a USB Device Is Connected to an Intel® NUC

Description

Whenever a USB device is connected to the Intel® NUC, a message appears that shows: Power surge on the USB port – Unknown USB Device needs more power than the port can supply.

Resolution

To solve the problem, follow the steps below.

  1. Update the Intel® NUC BIOS: BIOS Update Instructions for Intel® NUC.
  2. Download, install, and run the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA) to check for the latest driver updates. Install any updates.

If the steps above do not solve the problem, try the steps below.

  1. Disconnect all the USB devices from the Intel® NUC except the keyboard and mouse.
  2. Type Device Manager in the Windows* search bar and press enter.
  3. Click on the dropdown menu under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

  4. Right-click on every device under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, then click Uninstall.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Connect the USB device and check if the error prompts again.
