Summary

How to check if an Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor can be added or replaced in a multi-socket system.

Description

Is it possible to add or replace an Intel® Xeon® Processor in a multi-socket system?

Resolution

Yes, if all of the following are verified:

  1. Verify that the system's motherboard has additional sockets.
  2. Verify that the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor that is added or replaced has the same processor number as the other processors in the system.  Mixing components including but not limited to hardware, firmware, and software is not validated or supported.
  3. Verify that the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor supports the scalability of two or more processors. To check this:
    1. Visit the Intel Product Specifications website (Links available below).
    2. Search or navigate to your processor's specification page.
    3. Look under the Expansion Options for Scalability. A value of 2S, 4S, or 8S means that the processor can be used in a 2-socket, 4-socket, or 8-socket system, respectively.
  4. Verify that your system firmware Best Known Configuration (BKC) is updated to the latest version from your system manufacturer and applied to all processors in the system. Mixing components including but not limited to hardware, firmware, and software is not validated or supported.
