System Boots to EFI Shell After Windows Update*

Description

After applying a Windows update, the server no longer boots into Windows and instead drops to the system shell.

Resolution

The issue is related to the boot process and operating system startup sequence.

The Change Boot Order screen allows you to configure the desired order of legacy or UEFI boot devices in which the boot device is to be tried sequentially. Refer to the Change Boot Order Screen section in the Intel® Server System BIOS Setup Utility Guide page:

  1. Press <F2> to enter system BIOS setup.
  2. From the Main screen, select Boot Maintenance Manager.
  3. Choose the Change Boot Order option.
  4. Press F10 to save changes and reboot.

Additional information

After Windows* update, the system goes to the shell.
