Error: Chassis Fan Has Slowed or Stopped for Intel® Desktop Boards

Content Type: Troubleshooting   |   Article ID: 000007431   |   Last Reviewed: 04/28/2017

What are you seeing?
When trying to boot your Intel® Desktop Board, you see the error messages below:

  • Front Chassis fan has slowed or stopped, press enter to redetect
  • Rear Chassis fan has slowed or stopped, press enter to redetect

Why are you seeing it?
Intel Desktop Boards include a feature to alert you of possible problems with the system cooling solution (fans). The errors display if the system detects missing fans on either the front or rear chassis fan headers.

How to fix it
If you're using both front and rear chassis fans, try the following:

  • Confirm the fans are properly connected to the chassis fan headers.
  • Update to the latest BIOS version.
  • Test other chassis fans to eliminate defective or incompatible fans.

If only one or no fans are connected, you can disable the error message in the BIOS. To disable this message:

  1. During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
  2. Go to the Advanced > Fan Control menu.
  3. Disable Fan Detection Error Message.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
