Which Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) devices work with Intel® Server Boards and Systems?
UPS devices that use smooth sine wave, pure sine wave, or true sine wave output, with Online Topology, have a greater chance of compatibility. The power supplies for these devices use Active Power Factor Correction (Active PFC). Unpredictable results may occur using UPS devices that use a simulated sine wave output, or a stepped approximation.

Why is my server not booting when the UPS is connected?
Ensure that no USB cable connects the UPS to your system. In addition to the power cable, many UPS devices have a serial port or Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable that can plug into the system. See Connected USB Cabling Can Prevent Booting for Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems.

How do I make my UPS communicate with my server?
Intel® Server Boards and Intel® Server Systems support management through Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) or Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). Check your UPS documentation for support for these protocols.

Note If the power consumption of the equipment exceeds UPS capacity,1 the system will be overloaded and will shut down at the moment of an electrical discharge. It's important, therefore, to ensure that the capabilities of the UPS are greater than the total power requirement (in watts) of the Intel® Server System.

1 If in doubt, contact the UPS manufacturer.

Note

Intel® Server's Integrated Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) can be accessed by standard, off-the-shelf terminal, open-sourced, or terminal emulator utilities. One example is the IPMIUtility that allows access to sensor status information and power control. Customers own the risk of using open-source utilities. Intel has no control on these utilities and cannot guarantee any fix with these utilities.
