Intel plans to create the conditions for a pan-European semiconductor ecosystem in the European Union

Billions of planned investments in a resilient, end-to-end semiconductor value chain.

Intel Invests in Cutting-edge Manufacturing in Europe

With comprehensive investment plans in Europe, Intel is making a significant contribution to a more balanced global semiconductor market. In close coordination with the EU, governments, and local partners, the aim is to create a resilient value chain - and a pan-European semiconductor ecosystem that makes state-of-the-art chip technology available.

Important building blocks on the way to a continuous capacity corridor in Europe and an end-to-end value chain include the planned Intel locations in Germany and Poland and the existing location in Ireland. Mass production of wafers of the latest generation – Intel 4 technology – has already begun in Leixlip (Ireland). A state-of-the-art assembly and testing facility is to be built in Wroclaw (Poland). For the planned “Silicon Junction” factories in Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt), Intel will significantly expand the scope of investments and wafer production compared to the original calculations.

“Silicon Junction”: Facts and Figures About the Mega-fabs in Magdeburg

Two semiconductor factories that are unique in Europe are to be built in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt in the coming years. Intel has agreed with the German federal government on an expanded scope of the mega project. Investments in Magdeburg are expected to amount to more than 30 billion euros. The fabs are intended to produce state-of-the-art wafers and use the most advanced technologies of the Intel Angstrom era in manufacturing.

Intel signed the purchase agreement for the required land in November 2022. Since then, planning has been in full swing.

  • The first planned fab is expected to start operations four to five years after the European Commission approves the funding package.
  • Products for Intel as well as for Intel Foundry Services customers will be manufactured at the Magdeburg location.
  • An area of 450 hectares is available in the Eulenberg industrial area for the construction of the factories. In terms of size, this corresponds to just over 630 soccer fields.
  • The planned mega-fab in Magdeburg is expected to create 3,000 high-tech jobs. During the construction phase, around 7,000 workers will also be employed in the construction industry.
  • In addition, tens of thousands of additional jobs are expected to be created by suppliers and partners.

Environmental Sustainability and Intel's RISE 2030 Strategy

Intel has long been committed to sustainability in chip production and strives to continually minimize its impact on the environment. When planning and constructing new systems, the principles of ecological building are at the forefront - in line with Intel's sustainability goals.

With the RISE 2030 strategy (Responsible - Inclusive - Sustainable - Enabling), Intel has set itself ambitious goals for responsible, inclusive and sustainable business. These particularly influence the planned new projects. By 2030, Intel’s electricity requirement should be covered 100 percent by renewable energies, and the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040.

Another goal is positive net water consumption. Through community partnerships, among other things, Intel saved around 36.3 billion liters of water in 2022. An additional 11.5 billion liters were restored through project investments in watersheds.

Reducing waste and CO2 emissions also plays an important role in Intel's RISE 2030 strategy. As part of its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero, Intel has committed to building new factories to LEED standards.

Innovation and Know-how: Intel's Role in Training Future Professionals

Intel has been active in the German education system for decades with various programs such as:

  • Intel® Skills for Innovation supports teachers in preparing students for life and work in an increasingly digital world.
  • Intel AI for Youth engages youth in an inclusive way with AI technology and strengthens social skills.

Intel also promotes the university landscape on a large scale through Intel Labs. In connection with the planned construction of the fabs in Magdeburg alone, Intel Labs is cooperating with six universities in Saxony-Anhalt. Intel Labs supports them, among other things, in developing new courses, modules, and practical projects.

The aim is to promote innovation in the region. In addition, students should be equipped with all the necessary skills to work in the semiconductor industry. This creates the basis for training future specialists and for a sustainable talent pool, which is essential for building a semiconductor ecosystem.
