  • Intel SSDs Cooler Than Facebook or Twitter?

    According to the December print edition of PC World, the Intel X25-M SSD ranked No. 3 in the PC World Top 100 Best Products of 2009, ahead of both Facebook and Twitter. According to the publication, "This model's speedy test results put it at the top of our chart; its price and performance make it a compelling flash upgrade for notebook or desktop users." SSDs, or Solid State Drives, are storage devices that can replace a computer's hard drive. Because SSDs have no moving parts they offer faster performance and greater energy efficiency and durability.
  • Everything Channel Names Intel SSD a Best '09 Product

    Everything CHANNEL Test Center has named the 34nm Intel X25-M Mainstream SSD one of the Best Products of the Year for 2009. According to the publication, "The advanced feature set and more attractive pricing give Intel the potential to gain an even larger portion of the growing SSD market."
  • BSNL Unwires WiMAX in rural India

    BSNL launched India's first commercial WiMAX service on December 13 to begin bringing mobile broadband connectivity to rural India. Analysts predict India will be the biggest base on earth for WiMAX by 2012. Besides high-speed broadband Internet access, rural citizens can benefit from e-government services including bill payment, vehicle registration and issuance of birth certificates, as well as telemedicine, tele-education and banking services.

  • Copenhagen: Japan tops ICT Sustainability Index

    State of the art and well-planned Information and Communication Technology (ICT) such as computers and telecommunications equipment can help reduce carbon emissions by up to 25% if applied wisely. This is one outcome of an IDC report published yesterday in Copenhagen looking into readiness of G20 economies to apply ICT for better carbon management. Japan was named as best suited today and topped IDC's ranking. The report gives an in-depth country-by country analysis and walks the talk of reinventing ourselves as low-carbon economies.

  • Intel® Leibniz Challenge 2010: Application Period Begins

    For the fourth time, students in grades 9 through 13 can now apply to participate in the Intel Leibniz Challenge hosted by Intel and the Leibniz University Hanover and supported by the Initiative D21. The contest aims to introduce young people to the engineering profession and arouse interest in natural and technical sciences. The registration period ends on February 28th, 2010. The Intel Leibniz Challenge is part of the Intel Education Initiative which covers a range of education advancement programs for pupils, students, pedagogues as well as young entrepreneurs. The multi-faceted programs aim to improve the teaching and learning environment at schools, universities, and other educational institutions while providing access to the latest computing technologies.
  • Intel, President Obama Promote Math, Science Education

    In support of President Obama's U.S. Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Initiative, Intel committed more than $200 million over the next 10 years to train teachers in math, science and technology education. As part of its STEM investment, led by Former Intel Chairman Craig Barrett, Intel will help prepare all students to take Algebra I by 8th grade and give more students hands-on math, science opportunities, through Intel Math, Intel Teach and Intel's science fair programs.   • Intel CTO Justin Rattner kicks off Supercomputing '09

    Justin Rattner, Intel CTO, kicked off the Supercomputing 2009 (SC'09) conference today. Rattner asserted that the 3-D internet has the potential to be the "killer app" that can drive growth for High Performance Computers (HPC). He unveiled and demonstrated a new framework called ScienceSim, an open source virtual world that Intel helped to create for SC'09. He discussed examples of ScienceSim being used for applications from fern ecology to fashion research.
  • Intel Cloud Computing Service Measures Multicore App Performance

    To boost parallel programming, Intel introduced a Web-based service that allows software developers to assess how their applications will perform on a number of multicore processor configurations. Powered by Intel® Parallel Studio, the Intel® Parallel Universe Portal is a cloud computing analysis tool that tests parallel applications, written for the Windows operating system, in multicore environments on an on-demand basis. The tool is currently available to members of the Intel Software Network through the Intel Parallel Universe Portal at no charge.

  • Intel Boosts NASA's Supercomputing Brainpower

    Using 2,304 Intel® Xeon® 5500 series processors, NASA's Pleiades supercomputer has increased its "brainpower" by 35 percent allowing scientists to make new discoveries and gain greater insight into Earth's system and climate change. Not only does the enhanced supercomputer allow scientists to make new discoveries, the new processors are also environmentally friendly, using only one-eighth the power of previous generation processors to accomplish the same amount of work.   • Intel and SGI Break Supercomputing Boundaries

    Intel and SGI are scaling the extreme heights of supercomputing with a shared memory supercomputer called Altix UV. The system will lead the industry in maximizing bandwidth and minimizing latency on cluster and HPC applications. The system, which is being unveiled at Supercomputing 2009 in Portland, Ore., uses quad-, six-, or eight-core Nehalem-EX processors, and will deliver exceptional performance and scalability.   • Intel Capital to Announce New Investments at CEO Summit

    At the tenth annual Intel Capital CEO Summit in Huntington Beach, CA, Intel Capital President Arvind Sodhani will host a press conference at 12:30 p.m. PST tomorrow, Nov. 17. The press conference will be streamed live at this Web site. Sodhani will provide a general update on Intel Capital and announce several new investments spanning various geographies. The Intel Capital CEO Summit, which runs today through Wednesday, provides Intel Capital portfolio companies with company-building, deal-making and learning opportunities through keynote presentations, expert panel discussions and more than 500 matchmaking meetings between start-up CEOs and industry executives from some of the largest Global 2000 corporations.
  • New HPC Optimized Intel Processor Planned

    At Supercomputing 2009 in Portland, Ore., Intel unveiled a future High Performance Computing (HPC) optimized version of its forthcoming processor codenamed "Nehalem-EX." The six-core chip will run at higher frequencies than eight-core versions of the Nehalem-EX processors and will offer advantages on some HPC workloads. Customers will benefit from greater memory bandwidth and capacity and will be able to build single computers or "nodes" with up to 256 such chips.   • Ready, Set, Read: Intel® Reader Launches

    Intel® Reader The Intel Reader, a mobile handheld device designed to increase independence for people who have trouble reading standard print, is now available to assist the more than 55 million people who have specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia or vision problems such as low-vision or blindness. This paperback book-sized device converts printed text to digital text and reads it aloud to the user, allowing people to access the information that many of us take for granted, such as reading a menu or a favorite book.   • San Diego Supercomputer to Use Intel Chips, SSDs

    Intel® Solid State Drive X25E "Moving a physical disk head... is so last century," said Allan Snavely, associate director of San Diego Supercomputer Center. Unlike slower, hard disk drives that use moving parts, the Intel chips and Intel® High-Performance Solid-State Drives have been chosen for the University of California, San Diego's Gordon project that will build one of the world's most powerful supercomputers that will be dedicated to solving critical science and societal problems.   • Intel, IT Industry Collaborate for Taiwan Typhoon Relief

    Intel Taiwan is working with Acer, Asus, Microsoft Taiwan, the Ministry of Education, Red Cross Society and Taiwan Association for Educational Communications and Technology to set up IT learning environments for schools and digital services centres for communities to support the Typhoon Morakot disaster relief. Through this program, Acer, Asus, Intel Taiwan and Microsoft Taiwan will donate a total of 4,500 notebook PCs, netbooks, and desktop PCs with OS and software to help expedite education and community rebuilding in the typhoon affected areas. The typhoon-devastated schools will gain support from this program which combines PC donation and teachers training courses for building the IT learning environments. The digital services centers at communities are intended to support the agricultural products e-marketing, tourism development, indigenous culture communication, and after-school education.
  • Intel Capital Portfolio Company Enjoyor Completes IPO

    Intel Capital congratulates Enjoyor Technology Group for its successful initial public offering (IPO) today on China's Growth Enterprise Market (GEM). The launch of China's GEM is a significant milestone for the Chinese capital market and Enjoyor's listing is another example of Intel Capital's support of local technology innovation and entrepreneurship. Intel Capital invested in Enjoyor Technology Group earlier this year with the goal of expanding Enjoyor's research and development in traffic intelligence and its digital healthcare business. Enjoyor is the first Zhejiang enterprise to complete an IPO on the GEM, which provides a platform to finance companies in industries such as information technology, bio-medical and new energy.   • Intel Files Sanction Motion against AMD

    Intel has filed a motion in Delaware seeking sanctions against Advanced Micro Devices in the pending antitrust case. Intel asserts AMD failed to adequately retain documents in the case it filed against Intel in June of 2005. Intel also asserts that AMD misrepresented its efforts and tried to hide its failures from the Court and Intel. AMD claimed to have an "exemplary" scheme to retain documents in this case. It is clear that AMD did not and that some AMD executives and employees failed to retain thousands of documents and emails. Click here for more information.
  • Intel Helps Deliver Secure Health Information

    An updated version of the Intel® SOA Expressway for Healthcare, a high-performance health information gateway used by ISVs and system integrators like IGI to share information inside hospitals and with community caregivers and health information networks, is available for download. Using the Intel gateway for system interface and message processing within its ORBIT Portal, IGI has helped Newark Beth Israel Medical Center securely share emergency room patient records, immunization information and Medicaid medication history with New Jersey's state-run health information exchange.   • Intel My WiFi Technology Supports New Wi-Fi Direct Specification

    Mobile computing devices such as laptops, netbooks, smart phones, or other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices will soon be able to connect directly to one another in a new way, and at record wireless speeds. Today, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced a new specification available mid-2010 for connecting devices without a traditional home, office or hotspot access point. Intel® My WiFi Technology, the industry's first commercially available Wi-Fi PAN solution, will incorporate this new specification, enabling exciting new peer to peer and social networking applications. Intel My WiFi Technology with Wi-Fi Direct certification will continue to connect with the 100s of millions of existing Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices.
