Science and Math Rocks on Tonight Show

Finalists from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held last month in Reno, described their complex projects to Conan who reacted with confusion, boredom and pretend understanding. More than 500 schoolchildren, teachers and politicians are celebrating the winners of Intel®-Leibniz-Challenge 2009, announced at Leibniz University Hanover after four months of working on real-life computing-related exercises developed by engineers of Intel in Braunschweig. The winners include four members of the team 'no_name' were honoured by the President of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, receiving an internship at Intel in Braunschweig, grant for Leibniz University Hanover and hardware from Hewlett-Packard. As part of the German Intel Education program, the Intel-Leibniz-Challenge aims to fascinate teenagers about natural sciences and engineering professions. More than 2,200 schoolchildren had registered for this year's edition.

Intel Inside Nearly 80% of World's Fastest Supercomputers

Intel is continuing to expand the limits of supercomputing. According to the 33rd edition of the TOP500 supercomputers list, Intel processors are now inside 399 of the world's top 500 systems, including two in the top ten. Intel-based super computing platforms are playing a pivotal role in a number of research areas, from improving the safety of space exploration to forecasting global climate conditions. The high performance computing (HPC) community is especially enthusiastic about Intel® Xeon® 5500 processor series (formerly code-named Nehalem), which are already driving the research and analytical capabilities of 33 systems on the list despite only being launched four months ago. Russians Adopting WiMAX in Record Numbers

In just a few months since announcing commercial availability of WiMAX in Russia, Yota is touting over 76,000 new subscribers of the service, bringing affordable, super-fast mobile broadband Internet access to the citizen of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Launched in April, there are currently 1,300 new subscribers added daily to the most advanced wireless 4G technology, in a country where 3G networks aren't even available. Intel-based, WiMAX embedded notebooks are currently available in Russia from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI and Samsung. Over time, Yota expects to deploy WiMAX networks and services in over 40 Russian cities.

Pirai is World's First 1:1 Computing City

Pirai, Brazil has become the first city in the world to adopt 1:1 computing across its school system. The city recently announced the purchase of Intel-powered classmate PCs for students in all of its 21 public schools. The project will include city-wide network connectivity offered through the Digital Pirai Project. Intel will collaborate with local manufacturers and developers to customize the Intel-powered classmate PCs for the schools. This announcement follows several successful Intel-powered classmate PC milestones, including the deployment of half a million units in Portugal, as part of the government's Magellan Initiative. Intel Core Processor Brand Takes Center Stage

'Whiz Kids' Wow in Documentary in San Francisco

At a time when US students math and science scores have fallen to 24th in the world and President Obama has called for more young people in science and engineering, a film called Whiz Kids shows three youths who live the science life. The film focuses dramatically on their paths vying for a spot in the Intel Science Talent Search. The stars of the show and its director, a former Science Talent Search finalist, will be on site at the benefit premiere in San Francisco on Tuesday, June 16. Starting July 1, UQ WiMAX will be the first deployment aiming to reach an entire country with WiMAX service. UQ Communications estimates the next-generation mobile Internet broadband will be available to over 90 percent of the Japanese population by the end of 2012. With WiMAX, users can enjoy rich, interactive content outdoors and on the go. Intel is providing embedded WiMAX laptops based on Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology to enable mobile WiMAX broadband Internet access with OEMs including Toshiba, Panasonic and Onkyo. In addition, Intel Capital invested $43 million in UQ Communications to help continue the nationwide expansion of WiMAX service.

Mealworms are Intel Winners?

More than 110,000 votes came in for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair People's Choice Awards winners. First place is I-Ching "Frog" Tseng from Taiwan for her research project that looked at how mealworms might be a solution to the serious environmental pollution caused by styrofoam. Second place goes to Peter Massey and Shanauk Bakshi from Manhasset, NY for their project on Alzheimer's disease and a chemical agent that could potentially reverse memory loss. Third place winner is Anartya Mandal from Boston, MA for his research project that looked at how a spice found in Indian cuisine might be an answer to killing cancer cells.

Vroom! VW In-Vehicle Computer Prototype Powered By Intel

Volkswagen has developed an in-vehicle, fully-connected computer prototype based on Intel processors. The Deployment of Intel Teach in the World's 4th Largest Country

20,000 teachers in the world's 4th most populous nation - Indonesia - will soon be trained on how to bring technology into the classroom and equip kids with 21st century digital skills, thanks to a joint initiative between Intel and UNESCO. Corporate PC Costs - Penny Wise?

Companies hoping to shave costs by putting off the purchase of new PCs may actually spend more, according to a study commissioned by Intel and conducted by Wipro Product Strategy and Services. For a quick overview, there's also a fact sheet. According to the study, businesses can cut operational costs up to 52 percent with new PCs over four-year-old systems. Maintenance and acquisition costs are lowest at three years, making that the most cost-efficient time to buy. In fact, by buying then, companies can recoup their investment in in as little as 10 months if the PCs include Intel vPro technology. Possibly as important as cost, hanging onto to those old PCs could make the company vulnerable to up to 53 percent more security incidents in year four than year one.

The two Russian cities now have the leading, most advanced technology where 3G networks aren't even available, leap-frogging a technology generation with the ability to leverage 4G services. Study: Consumers Find Internet TV Valuable

At IDF Beijing, Pat Gelsinger disclosed that Intel's embedded business division will be offering Nehalem EP-based Intel® Xeon® processors - codenamed Jasper Forest - in early 2010 with 7-year long lifecycle support. The processors are designed specifically for embedded, communications and storage applications, such as ultra-dense blades, NAS and SAN, to deliver optimal performance per watt and high integration of I/O and memory for reduced real estate. What will be the killer app for the 4G mobile Internet? Developers in the Silicon Valley will now have the opportunity to try and answer that question with early access to WiMAX service this summer as part of the "WiMAX Innovation Network." During a keynote by Clearwire's Ben Wolff at CTIA, he disclosed that the network will initially cover more than 20 square miles in Silicon Valley, the heart of the high-tech industry. The network will also bring 4G wireless service to campuses of some of the world's leading technology innovators including early participants Google Inc. and Intel. Cisco Systems, Inc. will provide core Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) infrastructure equipment. The network access will give developers a head start on the commercial service scheduled to launch in the Bay Area in 2010.

Linux Foundation Hosts Moblin Project

Today, the Linux Foundation (LF) announced it will host the Moblin project, an optimized open source software stack and technology framework that delivers a visually rich Internet and media experience on Intel® Atom™ processor-based devices. As a non-profit dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux, the LF will take Moblin to the next level by increasing the project’s visibility and attracting a broader developer community. Intel will continue to contribute key technologies and work with the developer community to advance the Moblin project for mobile Internet devices, netbooks, nettops, in-vehicle infotainment and other embedded devices. Samsung Launches First Handheld WiMAX Device

At CTIA today in Las Vegas, Samsung announced the Samsung Mondi*, the first handheld WiMAX device in the U.S. Operating on Clearwire's Clear WiMAX mobile service and dubbed the "Broadband Mobile Entertainer," the Mondi has a 4.3" touchscreen, integrated GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as instant access to rich media and social networking websites. UQ Communications in Japan and Scartel LLC., in Russia are other examples of other Mondi operators preparing for commercial deployments of nationwide service using Samsung's mobile broadband WiMAX solution.
