How do I use a 16-bit memory addresses/data on 87C196KD?
Use a 16 Bit data bus to read and write in multiplexed mode. Write lines (WRL and WLH) are connected to High (WRH) and Low (WRL) RAM. Use the write strobe mode and set the Chip Configuration Register (CCR) value. Set the BUSWIDTH pin to High. The first address (A0) line is dropped so that you now use address lines 1 through 15.

When using the standard bus control mode you must use external logic, as noted in Figure 13-9 of the 8xC196KC / 8xC196KD User's Manual. You can use logic to decode WRL# and WRH# when using the 16 bit external memory addressing. See pages 13-13 to 13-16 in the User's Manual, Chapter 13.
Where can I find example programs for the MCS® 96 Microcontrollers?
There are software examples on the Software Support page on the Intel's Developer site. Other places to look for example code are in the MCS 96 Microcontroller User's Manuals and the MCS 96 Microcontroller Application Notes.
How do you interface an MCS 96 Microcontroller to Flash memory?
Technical Note - MCS 96: Interfacing Boot Block Flash Memories to the MCS 96 Family, details how to connect boot block Flash memory to an MCS 96 microcontroller. In addition, Application Note AP-621 - Interfacing the MCS 96 Microcontroller Family with Intel® Flash describes how to connect other types of Flash memory to an MCS 96 microcontroller.
Does Intel perform radiation testing on their products?
Radiation testing is not a qualification for Intel parts; therefore, we do not perform radiation testing. However, there are third party test houses that do perform radiation testing on semiconductor devices. These companies can provide more information on their services. Intel does not maintain a list of third party test houses. We recommend searching the Internet for a list of such companies.
Is there any documentation on oscillators that would work with Intel devices?
Application Note AP-155 - Oscillators for Microcontrollers describes the different uses of crystals and on-chip oscillators with Intel microcontrollers. Factors such as board dielectric and trace capacitances are also considered.
The new evaluation board does not seem to work with WIN 98* or WIN NT*, but works fine under DOS 3.1*. Is there a new version of the software that works under the newer Windows* environment or can customers get the source code (that they can modify) to work under these conditions?
The software contained in the shipment must be run on DOS* from boot-up and not a DOS*-Windows* application. The demo software runs on the evaluation board and has no interaction with the host PC operating system. The source code is not available at this time.
Schematics for the MCS® 296SA Microcontroller Evaluation Board did not come in the kit, how can they be obtained?
The schematics can be emailed to the customer by calling Intel® Customer Support at 1-800-628-8686. This file is quite large and the customer will need to make sure they can receive a large document via email. The schematics will be posted to this web page shortly.
Are there any military grade MCS 96 Microcontrollers still available and if not, what are the recommended replacements?
All Intel military grade components have been End Of Life'd (EOL) and are no longer produced or supported by Intel. There are no direct replacements for these components and a redesign will most likely be necessary. For a list of currently available components, please review the MCS 96 Microcontroller Commercial line card and MCS 96 Microcontroller Automotive line card.
How can you disable the watchdog timer on the 80C196KB before it is enabled?
The only method to disable a watchdog timer after it has started is with a component reset. There is no way to disable the watchdog timer before it is enabled. Writing a 1Eh followed immediately by an E1h, to address 0Ah, would clear the watchdog timer, but at the same time it would enable the watchdog timer. Not writing these values to address 0Ah will not enable the watchdog timer.
