Intel News Release
New cards build on Q3 announcement of WiMedia and Wireless USB reference designs for external solutions

Intel's UWB Host Solutions, based on the Certified Wireless USB Specification from the USB-IF and the WiNet Specification from the WiMedia* Alliance, use the Intel® Wireless UWB Link 1480 MAC (Media Access Controller) product and offer customers a choice of UWB PHYs (Physical Layer) from Alereon Inc. and Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

"The availability of our MC and HMC reference designs will enable significant integration of UWB solutions into notebook PCs, desktops, Ultra Mobile PCs and consumer electronic gadgets," said Ganesh Prasad, general manager of Intel's Ultra-Wideband Networking Operation. "This adoption of UWB solutions into PCs will accelerate the proliferation of UWB technology into CE and mobile devices, such as digital cameras, MP3 players and personal media players."

Intel will be demonstrating simultaneous Wireless USB and IP protocols functionality using MC and HMC modules based on its reference designs during CES 2007 at the WiMedia Techzone. In this technology demonstration, two notebook PCs enabled with MC and HMC modules communicate directly with each other using Intel's WiNet IP drivers, while one notebook simultaneously communicates with multiple USB devices connected to a third party Wireless USB Hub using Intel's Wireless USB drivers.

"As a global leader in silicon innovation, Intel has long championed the development of Certified Wireless USB and UWB technology," said Eric Broockman, Alereon CEO. "The Alereon PHY has been in volume production for over six months and we are ready to move forward with Intel and deliver MiniCard, ExpressCard/34 and Dongle form factor designs to customers. Our combined innovative effort translate to fewer wires, ultimately creating UWB enabled PCs and a variety of wireless consumer products."

"Intel's new reference designs greatly expand the Ultra-Wideband ecosystem and demonstrate multi-protocol operation in even the most challenging form factors," said Ran Yan, senior vice-president of Wireless Communications Technologies at Realtek. "Realtek's RTU7010 is an ultra-compact single-chip PHY that is expressly designed to enable all form factors, and we are very pleased to collaborate with Intel in the Half-MiniCard, MiniCard, and USB Dongle reference designs."
